Why a Garage Is Not a Closet Problem

A garage in a city with 9.5 miles of sandy beach along its Pacific edge fills up with boards, bikes, wetsuits still dripping, folding chairs and coolers, plus the tools and the paint and the holiday boxes every garage carries anyway. Most of that goes on the walls and up in the air, and the floor keeps enough clear space for a car.

A bedroom closet holds items of similar size in a conditioned room. A garage holds a bicycle, a ladder, a nine-foot board, a box of Christmas lights, a gallon of paint and a socket set, in a room with a concrete floor, no climate control, a large opening to the outside and dust off the door track and the street.

That changes the build. Cabinet depth is driven by what is bulky rather than by a rail of clothes. Shelves get spaced by object height, not by folded stacks. The heaviest items go low and the seasonal items go high. Something has to stay open and unshelved for the long objects, because a board or a ladder does not go in a cabinet at all. It goes on a wall rack, and the cabinetry gets planned around where those racks land.

Wall-Hung and Floor-Standing

Wall-hung cabinets carry their weight on the studs and leave the slab underneath clear. You can sweep under them, hose the floor without touching them, and park a bike or a trash barrel in the gap. That is the default we start from in Huntington Beach garages, because the floor is worth more here than the wall is.

Floor-standing cabinets go in where the load is heavy or the depth is deep: a bank of tool drawers, a run supporting a work surface, or tall storage for a ladder and a shop vacuum. Where we put cabinets on the floor, we keep the carcass up on a base or on adjustable levelers so the bottom panel is not sitting on concrete. Garage slabs get wet from a hose, from a car that came home in the rain, and from a wetsuit hung to drain. A base panel resting in that water is the first thing to swell and fail.

A bench does not have to be a shop. A run of counter along one wall at standing height with drawers beneath it handles waxing a board, fixing a bike derailleur, and every household repair that currently happens on the kitchen table. Doors or Open Shelving

Custom garage cabinets come with doors or without, and the choice is rarely all or nothing. Open shelving is faster to reach and cheaper per foot, and everything on it collects dust and airborne grit, which in a beach city means a fine layer of sand as well. Doors cost more and hide the contents, which does two things: it keeps the dust off and it stops the garage from reading as a wall of clutter from the driveway when the door is up.

The usual answer is a split. Doors on the runs holding anything you care about staying clean, such as camping gear, linens, paper goods, seasonal decorations and the things stored in cardboard. Open shelving for the bins, buckets, cleaning supplies and the items you grab on the way out to the beach and put back sandy. Open racks and hooks for the long items, since a door in front of a board just adds a step.

Salt Air in an Unconditioned Room

Huntington Beach sits at an elevation of 39 feet with the Pacific forming its southwest border, so a garage here is close to the water and its air is not the same as the air twenty miles inland. The city is affected every year by a marine layer, the cool ocean air meeting warm air over the land, which brings overcast and foggy conditions through May and June, and evenings here can be excessively damp. The rest is airflow and edges. An unconditioned garage in the middle of a hot spell also runs warmer than the house, so anything sensitive to heat, including paint, adhesives, candles and some electronics, belongs in a low cabinet on an interior wall rather than in an overhead rack.
